José Morales (Nueva York, EU, 1947)

Pintor, dibujante y creador de instalaciones. Sus estudios de dibujo y pintura comenzaron con Ethel Katz, en la Art Students’ League de Nueva York. En 1964 fue a España y estudió dibujo en la Academia Peña y en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. Al año siguiente se marchó a Francia y asistió a American College Abroad y a la Escuela de Bellas Artes de París. Becado por la Fundación Ford, ingresó nuevamente a la Art Students’ League de Nueva York y estudió escultura con José DeCreft y pintura con Julián Levi. Entre sus numerosas exposiciones individuales y colectivas ha representado a Puerto Rico en eventos internacionales tales como: XXVI Bienal de São Paulo (Brasil, 2004); XXXIV y XXX Festival International de Peinture de Cagnes (Francia, 2002, 1998), premiado Primièr Mention du Jury; III Salón International de Estandartes (Tijuana, México, 1998), donde recibe Primer Premio; V Bienal Internacional de Pintura de Cuenca (Ecuador, 1996), donde recibe Tercer Premio; Primer Premio, II Certamen Nacional de Artes Plásticas del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Puerto Rico, 1995) y II Bienal Internacional de Pintura del Caribe y Centroamérica (República Dominicana, 1994), premiado Mención Honorífica. Su obra explora la incomunicación, el aislamiento, la violencia y la soledad del mundo contemporáneo; utilizando diversos lenguajes plásticos y reflejando una gran maestría técnica y conceptual.

Painter, draftsman, and creator of installations. He began his studies in drawing and painting with Ethel Katz at the New York Art Students’ League. In 1964, he traveled to Spain and studied drawing at the Peña Academy and at the Madrid Circle of Fine Arts. The following year he went to France and attended the American College Abroad and the Paris School of Fine Arts. Under a scholarship from the Ford Foundation, he once again attended the New York League of Art Students, and studied sculpture with José DeCreft and painting with Julian Levi. Among his numerous individual and collective exhibitions, he has represented Puerto Rico in international events such as: the XXVI Biennial of São Paulo (Brazil, 2004); the XXXIV and XXX International Paint Festival of Cagnes (France, 2002, 1998), where he received the “Premièr Mention du Jury” award; the III International Salon of Banners (Tijuana, Mexico, 1998), where he received First Prize; the V Cuenca International Biennial of Painting (Ecuador, 1996), where he received Third Prize; the II National Plastic Arts Contest of the Museum of Contemporary Art (Puerto Rico, 1995), where he received First Prize; and the II International Biennial of Caribbean and Central American Painting (Dominican Republic, 1994), where he received an Honorable Mention. His work explores the lack of communication, isolation, violence, and loneliness of the contemporary world through diverse plastic media, and reveals vast technical and conceptual mastery.
