Gamaliel Rodríguez (1977 Bayamón, PR)

Pintor, fotógrafo y dibujante. Luego de graduarse de la escuela superior pública en Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez-Ayala ingresó al Ejército de los Estados Unidos en 1997. En el 2001 regresa a Puerto Rico para estudiar arte. En el 2004, terminado el bachillerato en pintura de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón en San Juan, Puerto Rico, parte para Inglaterra a realizar estudios de postgrado en el Kent Institute of Art & Design. Ha exhibido en Photo Miami, Red Dot Art Fair, Bridge, Art Chicago, Pulse, Fountain, Scope NY, Art L.A. En 2007 gano la Beca para Artistas Emergentes de la Scope Foundation. En 2011 asiste a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. A raíz del interés en su obra, Gamaliel ideó The Storehouse Group, lo que se denomina en el mundo del arte como un “non space project”. A través de este proyecto, él y otros compañeros artistas pudieron operar bajo la sombrilla de una “galería” que existe solo para participar en ferias y bienales. Aunque su interés era la pintura, terminó haciendo una maestría interdisciplinaria. Al culminar su año de estudio intensivo, regresa a Puerto Rico. Su obra se enfoca en los estudios del Realismo Social y los eventos actuales tales como el consumerismo, guerras políticas, psicológicas, y ciencias sociales entre otras.

Painter, photographer and draftsman. After graduating from public high school in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez-Ayala entered the United States Army in 1997. In 2001 he returned to Puerto Rico to study art. In 2004, after finishing his bachelor’s degree in painting at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he left for England to pursue graduate studies at the Kent Institute of Art & Design. He has exhibited at Photo Miami, Red Dot Art Fair, Bridge, Art Chicago, Pulse, Fountain, Scope NY, Art L.A. In 2007 he won the Scope Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. In 2011 he attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. As a result of interest in his work, Gamaliel devised The Storehouse Group, what is referred to in the art world as a “non space project”. Through this project, he and other fellow artists were able to operate under the umbrella of a “gallery” that exists only to participate in fairs and biennials. Although his interest was in painting, he ended up pursuing an interdisciplinary master’s degree. At the culmination of his year of intensive study, he returned to Puerto Rico. His work focuses on Social Realism studies and current events such as consumerism, political and psychological wars, and social sciences among others.
