Rafael Ferrer (San Juan, P.R., 1933)

Pintor, escultor, artista gráfico, profesor y músico. Realizó estudios en la Universidad de Syracuse, Nueva York (1951) y en la Universidad de Puerto Rico (1952-1954). En 1966 se estableció en Estados Unidos donde ha sido profesor en diversas universidades, entre ellas, Philadelfia College of Art. Entre 1968 y 1972 realizó instalaciones improvisadas con materiales efímeros e invadió espacios de arte en respuesta a acontecimientos mundiales. Su obra se ha presentado en diversos museos y galerías de Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico y Europa. Ha sido merecedor de importantes distinciones como: la Beca de la Fundación Guggenheim (1975), el Premio Pennsylvania Hazlet (1982) y el Pew Foundation Grant (1994), entre otros. Colecciones como las del Museum of Modern Art, el Metropolitan y el Withney en Nueva York han adquirido su obra. Se le ha reconocido como artista de vanguardia y sus trabajos conceptuales e instalaciones han sido asociados con el neodadaísmo y el antiarte.

Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, professor and musician. He studied at Syracuse University, New York (1951) and at the University of Puerto Rico (1952-1954). In 1966 he settled in the United States where he has taught at several universities, including the Philadelphia College of Art. Between 1968 and 1972 he created improvised installations with ephemeral materials and invaded art spaces in response to world events. His work has been presented in various museums and galleries in the United States, Puerto Rico and Europe. He has received important distinctions such as the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1975), the Pennsylvania Hazlet Award (1982) and the Pew Foundation Grant (1994), among others. Collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan and the Withney in New York have acquired his work. He has been recognized as an avant-garde artist and his conceptual works and installations have been associated with neo-dadaism and anti-art.
