Jaime Suárez (San Juan, PR, 1946)
Escultor, arquitecto, ceramista, escenógrafo, dibujante y profesor. Completó, en 1969, su Bachillerato en Arquitectura en la Universidad Católica de Washington, D.C., donde tomó cursos electivos de pintura y cerámica. En 1970 hizo su Maestría en Diseño Urbano en la Universidad de Columbia en Nueva York. En 1971 asistió a talleres en el programa de Bellos Oficios de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Co-fundador del Grupo Manos en 1976, el cual dio paso a la creación de Casa Candina en 1980. En su extensa trayectoria como ceramista ha exhibido en Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, Nueva York, Nuevo México, Colombia y Puerto Rico. Ha sido galardonado con varios premios en competencias internacionales de cerámica en Faenza, Italia y en Zagreb, Croacia. Se destaca también por su trascendental labor en el fomento de la cerámica como expresión artística en Puerto Rico. Autor del famoso Tótem telúrico en la Plaza del Quinto Centenario en el Viejo San Juan y de murales cerámicos. Sus piezas son a menudo concebidas como instalaciones. Actualmente ejerce como profesor de Diseño de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico.
Jaime Suárez (San Juan, PR, 1946)
Sculptor, architect, ceramist, scenographer, draftsman, and professor. In 1969 he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he took electives in painting and ceramics. In 1970 he completed his Master of Arts in Urban Design at Columbia University in New York. He attended workshops at the Fine Arts program at the University of Puerto Rico in 1971. He co-founded the Manos Group in 1976, which later led to the creation of Casa Candina in 1980. During his extensive trajectory as a ceramist, he has exhibited his work in Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, New York, Nuevo Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. He has received awards at international ceramics competitions in Faenza, Italy and in Zagreb, Croatia. He is also known for his transcendental work in promoting ceramics in Puerto Rico as a means of artistic expression. He is author of ceramic murals and of the famous Tótem telúrico (Telluric Totem Pole) in the Plaza of the Fifth Centennial in Old San Juan. His pieces are frequently conceived of as installations. He is currently a design professor at the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.
